CHICAGO - Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) announced today the beginning of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, members of the U.S. House of Representatives receive artistic submissions from their districts as part of the annual art competition for high school students. The competition is open to all high school students from the 4th Congressional District. The winning piece of art will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, alongside winning art pieces from students from all across the United States.

"I represent a district and a city disproportionately affected by gun violence. In 2020 alone, Chicago suffered 3,261 shootings and 769 murders. The majority of victims were Black and Latino youth—the sons, daughters, colleagues, and friends of people in my neighborhood and across the city.

"My heart is broken for the passing of my dear friend and legendary labor activist Karen Lewis. As head of the Chicago Teachers Union, she forcefully fought for educators and students, and mentored generations of defenders of workers' rights in Chicago and the nation. Today is a sad day for the labor movement.
