Internships

The Office of Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García offers internships in both his Washington D.C. and Chicago offices. Internship programs run throughout the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters and interns are compensated at a rate of $15/hour and must be able to work at least 30 hours/week. 

 

Start Date: September 15, 2021

End Date: December 15, 2021 

 

Our office will hold in-person internships this semester. Interns are required to secure their own housing.

 

Fall 2021 Application Deadline: Wednesday, August 25, 2021

 

Congressional interns will have the opportunity to serve in a wide range of capacities including but not limited to:

  • Managing phone calls

  • Data entry

  • Responding to constituent requests

  • Sorting mail

  • Researching legislation

  • Attending briefings and hearings

  • Assisting with constituent casework 

  • Assisting and planning events 

 

Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to specialize in legislative or communications related assignments depending on their interests. Our internship program is designed to be a learning experience in which you are exposed to a variety of areas including constituent services, scheduling, office administration, press and communications, and legislative policy. 

 

Our office is committed to building a team with diverse lived and professional experience that well equips our team to serve the Illinois 4th District. Candidates are encouraged to apply and describe in their cover letter how their experience translates to the needs of the office and the role. Ties to IL04 are considered but not required. While we are happy to sponsor course credit when available, enrollment in a higher education institution is not required.

The D.C. Office operates Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Eastern Time and our Chicago Office operates Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Central Time. Individuals with Illinois ties are strongly encouraged to apply.
