Washington, DC- Today, Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) voted in favor of H.R. 8, legislation which requires a background check on every gun sale or transfer, including those conducted by unlicensed gun sellers.

Congressman García issued the following statement following the passage of this bill in the U.S. House of Representatives:

"As a Member of the House representing a district disproportionately affected by gun violence, I know firsthand the toll it takes on our communities.

Washington, DC- Today during a hearing of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, "Examining How Federal Infrastructure Policy Could Help Mitigate and Adapt to Climate Change", Congressman Jesus "Chuy" García highlighted the impact that climate change has on underserved, working class and minority communities:

"The fact is, climate change is causing more extreme weather events and will put more strain on our crumbling infrastructure. During the last polar vortex, two steel beams supporting Lake Shore Drive in Chicago cracked as did transit rail in Minneapolis.

Washington, DC- Yesterday, the Committee on Financial Services convened the hearing entitled, "Homelessness in America: Examining the Crisis and Solutions to End Homelessness."

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report, there were 552,830 people experiencing homelessness in the United States on a single night in 2018. Racial minorities are disproportionately represented among people experiencing homelessness in 2018.

Washington, D.C.- Today Rep. Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04), joined by Reps. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-07) and 83 more Democratic Members, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) and Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee Chair Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), sent a letter to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) director Lee Cissna raising grave concerns about the growing backlog of adjudications at the agency.

"I was saddened to learn the tragic news of the passing of Pastor Vic, as we all called him. This is a huge loss for my district and for Chicago. Years ago, he was able to purchase an abandoned church and transform it into one of the most important community centers in Little Village, with a bilingual, multi-cultural congregation that attracted young people from across the city.
