Chicago, IL - Today an appeals court in Chicago reversed an earlier decision that stopped Pipeline Health from closing Westlake Hospital from closing. The new decision allows Pipeline to close the facility and stop serving the community. Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García issued the following statement:
Chicago, IL – Today the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it will propose new regulations to require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in all public housing units subsidized by HUD. Last month, Congressman "Chuy" García (IL-04), Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) introduced the Safe Housing for Families Act, legislation that would make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in (HUD) housing units.

Chicago, IL -Yesterday Cook County Court Judge Moshe Jacobius held Pipeline Health, owner of Westlake Hospital, in contempt of court. The judge ruled that Pipeline Health violated a temporary restraining order when it suspended services at Westlake Hospital on April 9th. Today, Pipeline Health continued to avoid their initial commitment to keep the hospital open by announcing in a press release that it wanted to transfer ownership of the hospital to the Village of Melrose Park.
Washington, DC- Yesterday Chicago's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released a report outlining its findings about the Chicago Police Department's (CPD) gang database. The review found the database is riddled with inaccurate and outdated information that put innocent people at risk of a severe sentence, high bond or deportation. It also sheds light on the racial bias of the information, as 91.3% of the individuals designated as gang members in the past 20 years have been African American and Latino males.

The sudden suspension of services drew the ire of U.S. Rep. Jesus "Chuy" García, D-Ill.; the hospital is in his 4th Congressional District. He condemned the decision in a statement saying the hospital was a "critical asset for Melrose Park."
In an email statement released Monday, Congressman Garcíasaid that he was "very concerned about reports that Westlake Hospital may be closing as soon as tomorrow.
"The closure of the hospital would harm people in my community who are currently being treated by doctors in that facility and who don't have other options for their health care," he said.
