"I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Trump Administration to enforce new restrictions on asylum seekers at our southern border. This decision reverses decades of U.S. policy of welcoming and protecting refugees whose lives are at stake.

Washington, D.C. - Today, the Safe Housing for Families Act (H.R. 1690, now entitled CO Alerts Act) was approved in the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support. The bill, which was introduced in March by Congressmen Jesús "Chuy" García (Il-04) and Joe Cunningham (SC-01) will provide funds for carbon monoxide detectors in federally subsidized housing units. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson signaled support for the bill during testimony before the House Financial Services Committee in May.

Chicago, IL – Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) hosted an informational session on the Trump Administration's mean-spirited public charge rule and what it means for immigrant families Friday at Esperanza Health Center in Brighton Park. This new rule would allow immigration officials to deny immigrants green cards based on their income or the wholly legal action of using of public benefits like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Medicaid.
