As a member of the Financial Services Committee, I will encourage responsible urban development that takes into account community displacement and emphasizes transit-oriented, accessible and inclusive development. I intend to be a champion for fair housing policies and increased federal investment in affordable housing.
The Great Recession of 2008 led to an unprecedented foreclosure crisis that was precipitated by unfair, under-regulated, and predatory mortgage lending practices. Chicago, like so many areas across the US, was devastated by the crisis. I am committed to ensuring that the policy missteps that led to the recession are never repeated again.

Chicago, IL – Congressman "Chuy" García (IL-04) joined Illinois State Senator, Martin Sandoval, representatives from St. Anthony's Hospital, and Focal Point CEO, Guy A. Medaglia, and others at a press conference to announce plans for the Focal Point Community Campus and the new location for St. Anthony's Hospital.

Chicago, IL - Today Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) joined IL State Representative Will Guzzardi and representatives from a coalition of organizations, including the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, in support of a proposal to build 100 units of affordable housing in a transit-oriented development for families near the Logan Square CTA station.
Chicago, IL – Today the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it will propose new regulations to require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in all public housing units subsidized by HUD. Last month, Congressman "Chuy" García (IL-04), Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) introduced the Safe Housing for Families Act, legislation that would make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in (HUD) housing units.
Congressman García issued the following statement upon learning of HUD's decision:
Washington, DC– U.S. Representative Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04), a member of the House Financial Services Committee which has jurisdiction of federal housing, and Representative Joe Cunningham (SC-01) on Tuesday introduced the Safe Housing for Families Act to provide carbon monoxide detectors in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) housing units. Democratic Whip Clyburn along with Reps. Norton, Moore, Clarke, Velázquez, S. Maloney, Clay, Tlaib, Fudge, Rose, Cohen and others joined as original cosponsors.
Washington, DC- Yesterday, the Committee on Financial Services convened the hearing entitled, "Homelessness in America: Examining the Crisis and Solutions to End Homelessness."
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report, there were 552,830 people experiencing homelessness in the United States on a single night in 2018. Racial minorities are disproportionately represented among people experiencing homelessness in 2018.
