Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García’s Proposed Legislation Moves HUD to Change Regulation on Carbon Monoxide Detectors

April 18, 2019

Chicago, IL – Today the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it will propose new regulations to require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in all public housing units subsidized by HUD. Last month, Congressman "Chuy" García (IL-04), Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) introduced the Safe Housing for Families Act, legislation that would make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in (HUD) housing units.

Congressman García issued the following statement upon learning of HUD's decision:

"I am pleased to see that HUD is moving in the right direction and placing the wellbeing of families first. Carbon monoxide detectors are inexpensive and easy to install. They save lives and there is no reason why families living in federal public housing should have to worry about the safety of their homes.

"HUD's decision underscores the importance of passing the Safe Housing for Families Act which would provide funding and make detectors in public housing required by law across the United States.

"I look forward to reviewing the rules HUD will issue and will continue to work to ensure that those living in public housing, often communities of color, the elderly and the economically disadvantaged are protected from carbon monoxide poisoning."
