Mayors present the Nautical Sextant Award for Stewardship

CHICAGO– On Wednesday, February 22, during their quarterly meeting the Proviso Municipal League presented U.S. Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) with the Nautical Sextant Award for his leadership and vision. The Proviso Municipal League is comprised of Mayors of the Western Cook County suburbs and led by Northlake Mayor Sherwin, North Riverside Mayor Mengoni, and Hillside Mayor Tamburino.

Congressman García thanked the mayors for their invaluable efforts and their partnership to help communities in the western suburbs grow and thrive and highlighted the billions in funding he has helped secure at the federal level for Illinois and the Western Cook County municipalities.

“I’m proud to have voted for and passed the historical Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a $13billion dollar investmentto increase gun control and investments in violence prevention measures like first responder support, mental health services, and school safety programs,” said Congressman García

“Creating safe communities will require these investments as well as doubling-down on the equitable access to education, healthcare, housing, and economic opportunity,” he added.

Congressman García discussed his focus on the implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). “Under the IIJA, I helped secure $17 billion in infrastructure funding for Illinois—money for workforce development, flood mitigation and rail safety, including $8 million for improving and eliminating rail crossings in Franklin Park, new roads and bridges, and much more.”

“Under the IRA, I helped secure $18 billion dollars for broadband expansion, energy efficient alternatives, as well as lowering the cost of drug prescriptions and capping insulin at $35 for Medicare recipients,” added the Congressman.

Congressman García has also secured $37.6 million for 25 CPF projects across the 4th Congressional District including the Brookfield Zoo, PACE Transit Signal program, health care centers, and municipal lead pipe replacement and water management in Cicero, Berwyn, Northlake, and Melrose Park.

After the devastating storms some areas of the district suffered this summer, Congressman García called on the Biden administration to declare a state of emergency and get urgent assistance to affected communities. “We were able to secure nearly $305 million in FEMA assistance to help families recover,” said the Congressman.

“From protecting our rights to securing funds for our communities, know that you’ve got a friend working hard for you in Congress.”
