García, Correa, US Citizen Spouses of Undocumented Immigrants, Business and Labor Leaders Join to Continue to Push for Work Permits for Long Term Immigrants
WASHINGTON, DC— Today Congressmen Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) and Lou Correa (CA-46) joined the American Business Immigration Coalition, American Families United and SEIU at a virtual press conference to highlight how the recent Executive Action to expand work authorizations for immigrant spouses and parents of U.S. citizens will help keep families together, strengthen the economy and help create jobs. Congressman García also urged President Biden and his administration to implement the program as swiftly and generously as possible, to ensure that as many families as possible are included. Rep. García also reiterated his call to extend work permits for long-term immigrants who have contributed to our communities.
A video recording of the press conference can be found here.
“We are grateful that the President recently announced parole in place for spouses of US citizens and streamlined work permits for DACA holders. These are great steps forward,” said Congressman García. “We are ready to partner with the administration to ensure swift and efficient implementation of these changes for the benefit of our immigrant families and our economy. But we need to do more.”
“I have been calling for almost two years for an expansion of parole and work permits for immigrants who have been here sometimes for decades,” continued Congressman García. “The President says Congress has to act and pass meaningful and positive immigration legislation. But the reality is that under this MAGA Republican majority, that is not possible right now. Five months ago, even a bipartisan bill that included strong border restrictions, which in past years Republicans have supported, was killed when Trump told Republicans he opposed it.”
“This is personal for me. This is one of the reasons I came to Congress, and I will continue working with partnering organizations, community leaders and my colleagues in Congress for work permits for long-term immigrants,” finalized Congressman García.
