Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García’s Statement on Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement on Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated in the United States from September 15 to October 15:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the trailblazers who have fought for our community’s rights, inclusion, and visibility. In Chicago, I think about Manuelita García, a fighter for education equity, who in 2001 organized Madres de la Villita to start a hunger strike for the construction of a promised high school in our neighborhood. I think about William “Bill” Luna, a patriot, educator, and fierce advocate for the recognition of the contributions of Latinos in the armed forces. I think about José Gamaliel Gonzalez, a talented visual artist and activist who helped expose inequality through his murals, and as a leader of the Chicano arts scene of the 70’s and 80’s. And I think about the many groups and individuals who advocate tirelessly for migrants and mixed-status families, ensuring they receive the services and support they need to continue thriving and contributing to the social and cultural fabric of Chicago and the country.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to both celebrate our achievements and steel our resolve for the tremendous work that remains ahead of our community. From passing meaningful immigration reform, to protecting voting rights, ensuring economic empowerment and political representation, there is an urgency to provide the resources our communities need to succeed. I vow to continue fighting every day to ensure Latinos receive the recognition and investments needed to thrive.”
