Congressman Jesus “Chuy” García Applauds Removal of Citizenship Question from 2020 Census
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) released the following statement after the Department of Commerce formally announced that the 2020 U.S. Census will be printed without the citizenship question.
"Today's news that the Census will be printed without the citizenship question is a victory for everyone. Every single person in our democracy counts—and deserves to be counted in the census. Today's announcement is especially important for communities of color, working class families, and immigrants. I have been opposed to the citizenship question in the 2020 Census since it was first announced and welcome today's victory," said Rep. Garcia.
"Our fight to count every single person, however, is not over. Though the question will not be printed in the 2020 census, the Court's decision left the door open for future attempts to include a citizenship question in a future Census.
In 2018, as Cook County Board Commissioner for the 7th District, Congressman García filed an Affidavit in connection with State of New York, et al. v United States Department of Commerce, et al. expressing concerns about how his constituents would be affected by the citizenship question in the 2020 census.
