Congressman García Highlights Release of $760 Billion Framework to Make Transformative Infrastructure Investments Across U.S.
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04), a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Co-Chair of the Congressional Future of Transportation Caucus, joined Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio, Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, and Ways & Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal to release a framework for a five-year, $760 billion investment in infrastructure to address the country's most urgent infrastructure needs. The "Moving Forward" framework significantly expands federal investments to promote transformative projects that are smarter, safer, and made to last.
"People are sick and tired of polluted and congested roads, crumbling bridges, and infrequent or unreliable train service," said Rep. Chuy Garcia. "As America's largest transportation hub, Chicago will directly benefit from this major infrastructure investment. The $760B infrastructure framework we released today will create thousands of good union jobs, promote sustainable transportation alternatives to address climate change and congestion, and fix our crumbling roads and bridges in Chicago and across the nation.
"As we advance this much needed proposal, I will work to ensure it is as environmentally conscious and mindful of decades-long divestment that has isolated working people and communities of color from job opportunities, economic development, and affordable and reliable access to school, healthcare, and services."
The "Moving Forward" framework outlines major investments in highways, rail, and transit systems, airports, ports and harbors, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure, brownfields, and broadband infrastructure.
The proposal will:
- Bring existing infrastructure into a state of good repair and enables the completion of critical projects through long-term, sustainable funding.
- Set a path toward zero carbon pollution from the transportation sector, create jobs, protect our natural resources, promote environmental justice, and increase resiliency to climate change.
- Ensure a transportation system that is green, affordable, reliable, efficient and provides access to jobs
- Provide safe, clean, and affordable water and wastewater services.
- Prioritize the safety of the traveling public.
- Help combat climate change by creating good-paying jobs in clean energy, investing in energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas pollution.
- Expand broadband internet access, adoption for unserved and underserved rural, suburban, and urban communities.
- Modernize 9-1-1 public safety networks.
- Create family-wage jobs with Davis-Bacon and other strong worker protections.
- Support U.S. industries, including steel and manufacturing, through strong Buy America protections
