WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) delivered a speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives honoring the life and legacy of José “Cha Cha” Jiménez, who passed away on January 10th:

“Mr. Speaker:
“I rise today to honor the life of a fighter for human rights, José “Cha Cha” Jiménez, who passed away on January 10th, after a life dedicated to social justice.
“Cha Cha, as he was fondly called, was the founder of the Young Lords, an organization created by Puerto Rican teens with the original purpose of providing a safe space in a changing Chicago.
“Inspired by the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and Puerto Rican leader Pedro Albizu Campos, Cha Cha transformed the Young Lords from a street organization into a social justice group to fight for equality and freedom beyond Chicago.
“Their movement was rooted in the self-determination of Puerto Ricans on the island and the mainland.
“They organized actions against gentrification and displacement of Puerto Ricans in Lincoln Park, Chicago. They fought against police brutality, and brought much needed basic services like education, child care, and health services to our neighborhoods.
“Cha Cha understood that the Latino and Black communities were facing similar struggles and forged an alliance with the Black Panthers to help underserved, low-income communities.
“Soon after, they partnered with a group of white, low-income residents called the Young Patriots - - establishing Chicago’s Rainbow Coalition.
“Rest in power, Cha Cha Jiménez.”

“Hoy quiero honrar la vida de un luchador por los derechos humanos, José “Cha Cha” Jiménez, quien falleció el 10 de enero, después de una vida dedicada a la justicia social.
“Cha Cha, como lo llamaban cariñosamente, fue el fundador de los Young Lords, una organización creada por adolescentes puertorriqueños con el propósito original de brindar un espacio seguro en un Chicago cambiante.
“Inspirado por los escritos del Dr. Martin Luther King y Malcolm X, y el líder puertorriqueño Pedro Albizu Campos, Cha Cha transformó a los Young Lords de una organización callejera a un grupo de justicia social para luchar por la igualdad y la libertad más allá de Chicago.
“Su movimiento se basó en la autodeterminación de los puertorriqueños en la isla y en el continente.
“Organizaron acciones contra la gentrificación y el desplazamiento de los puertorriqueños en Lincoln Park, Chicago. Lucharon contra la brutalidad policial y trajeron servicios básicos muy necesarios como educación, cuidado infantil y servicios de salud a nuestros vecindarios.
“Cha Cha comprendió que las comunidades latina y negra enfrentaban luchas similares y forjó una alianza con los Panteras Negras para ayudar a las comunidades marginadas y de bajos ingresos.
“Poco después, se asociaron con un grupo de residentes blancos de bajos ingresos llamados Young Patriots y establecieron la Coalición Arcoíris de Chicago.
“El liderazgo de Cha Cha unió a personas de todos los orígenes para luchar colectivamente por un futuro mejor y su legado perdurará para las generaciones venideras.
