Statement by Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García on the Passing of Carmen R. Moreno

June 5, 2019

Chicago, IL- Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) issued the following on the passing of Carmen R. Moreno:

"Carmen Moreno was a long-time Little Village resident who owned and operated Azteca Currency Exchange on 26th Street. She will be remembered in the community for her friendliness and commitment to improving the neighborhood. Her involvement with the Little Village Chamber of Commerce helped strengthen this commercial district, making it the second largest revenue generating area in the city.

"Carmen came from Puerto Rico as a young woman and was a pioneer who excelled as one of the first female entrepreneurs in Little Village. She was an enthusiastic supporter of building the Little Village Arch, and I will always remember her excitement when the project was built.

"She was very fond of Mexican history, culture and traditions, which endeared her to the predominantly Mexican community in the neighborhood. I am honored to have known her for more than 20 years and I am grateful for her contributions to the empowerment of women and small business owners in my district. I will be thinking of her family during this difficult time."
