Statement by Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García on the Announcement of DHS Secretary Nielsen Leaving the Administration

Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García issued the following statement upon President Trump's announcement of Kirstjen Nielsen leaving her position as Secretary of Homeland Security:

"President Trump has implemented the cruelest immigration policies our nation has seen in generations. On Friday, his administration admitted it may take up to two years to identify and reunite thousands of migrant children who were separated from their families under Secretary Nielsen's purview. Guided by racism and an obsession with an ineffective wall, immigration policies under Trump and Secretary Nielsen have caused and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis. Replacing the head of the Department of Homeland Security will not resolve the leadership crisis in the White House. What we need are policies that will address the long-term challenge of immigration effectively and humanely. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to address the root causes of migration and towards comprehensive immigration reform."
