Rep. García Votes Against Republican Attacks to Health Care and Reproductive Freedoms

January 11, 2023

Elected officials are not their constituent’s medical providers

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 26 and H.Con.Res. 3, two Republican bills that spread disinformation, criminalize doctors, and attack reproductive health care.

“Elected officials are not medical providers. Yet, the bills passed by Republicans in the House today dangerously insert politics into the doctor-patient relationship and go as far as threatening criminal prosecution for health care workers.

“In contrast, last night the Illinois State Senate and House passed a bill centered around protecting Illinoisans' right to receive reproductive healthcare by protecting providers from legal action originating from out-of-state.

“In Illinois, we will always defend women’s right to make their own decisions on health care and bodies. In Washington, I will continue fighting to protect our freedoms and to protect our health care providers.”
