Rep. García’s Statement on Biden Administration’s Failure to Redesignate TPS for El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal

June 13, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement on the Biden Administration’s decision to not redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua:

“Today, the Biden administration missed an opportunity to redesignate TPS for El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal. This announcement of an 18-month extension is not nearly enough. This extension just kicks meaningful action further down the road, leaving TPS holders without the stability they need.

“Today’s announcement also ignores the plight of Venezuelans who continue to flee widespread violence, political instability and food and medicine shortages.”

“TPS holders are part of the fabric of our communities as our small business owners, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. We need a humanitarian approach to support immigrants who have been here sometimes for decades. We need to redesignate their status without delay.”
