Rep. García Applauds New Protections for Immigrant Workers

January 13, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s announcement on new guidance to protect immigrant workers against labor and civil rights violations at the workplace.

“All workers, regardless of immigration status, have the fundamental right to be protected against labor violations and should be able to speak up without fear of retaliation. Until now, employers used immigration status against undocumented workers, subjecting them to subminimum wages and unsafe working conditions.

“The Biden administration’s announcement empowers workers and upholds their right to unionize, earn living wages, and work in safe conditions regardless of immigration status.

“While I applaud this announcement, I urge the Biden administration to make these protections permanent, so that we can raise labor standards for all workers regardless of citizenship status.”
