WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to speak out against Trump’s proposed double tax on remittances that would destabilize immigrant families and economies here and abroad.

Remarks as delivered:
“I rise to oppose the Trump Administration’s double tax on remittances — part of a broader war on working-class immigrants that punishes those who contribute the most to our national economy.
“When immigrants send money home, they’re not just helping loved ones — they’re keeping entire communities afloat in countries like Mexico, Nigeria, and the Philippines.
“By cutting off vital support to families abroad, this tax deepens poverty, it weakens stability, and it drives more people to migrate out of desperation.
“Instead of asking the ultra-wealthy to pay what they owe, they’re shifting the burden to the people who can least afford it.
“Undocumented immigrants alone pay $580 billion dollars in federal, state, and local taxes to our country— more than some of the ultra-rich who claim patriotism, but hide under their wealth and abuse the system.
“It's a double standard that undermines our economy and our values.
“This isn’t just a bad policy — it’s an unjust double tax on the very people who power our economy and our communities.

“Me levanto para oponerme al impuesto doble del gobierno de Trump sobre las remesas, parte de una guerra contra los inmigrantes de clase trabajadora que castiga a quienes más contribuyen a la economía de este país.
Cuando los inmigrantes envían dinero a sus familias, no solo ayudan a sus seres queridos, también mantienen a flote a comunidades enteras en países como México, Nigeria y Filipinas.
Al cortar ese apoyo vital a las familias en el extranjero, este impuesto aumenta la pobreza, provoca más inestabilidad y obliga a más personas a migrar por desesperación.
En lugar de pedirles a los más ricos que paguen lo que deben, este gobierno se los está cobrando a quienes menos tienen.
Tan solo los indocumentados pagan $580 mil millones en impuestos federales, estatales y locales a nuestro país, más que muchos ricos que hablan de patriotismo, mientras esconden su dinero y abusan del sistema.
Es una doble moral que daña nuestra economía y traiciona nuestros valores.
Esto no es solo una mala política, es un doble impuesto injusto sobre la misma gente que sostiene a este país y nuestras comunidades.”
