Garcia, Durbin Discuss Immigration Reform with Illinois Advocates
CHICAGO – U.S. Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (D-IL-04) and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today hosted a call with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR)and other immigration and legal service organizations to provide an update on federal immigration reform efforts and priorities for the new legislative session. García and Durbin stressed the urgency of passing immigration reform legislation under the Biden-Harris Administration.
"As the first Mexican immigrant from the Midwest in Congress I will always prioritize listening to the insights and concerns of our community and trusted advocates fighting for immigrants' rights," García said. "We must transform our immigration system to respect the dignity of immigrants and I look forward to working with Senator Durbin, the Biden-Harris Administration, and community advocates to make that a reality. Congress must send the president a bill that will provide a pathway to citizenship for as many undocumented immigrants as possible and begin to disentangle our immigration laws from our racist criminal justice system."
"Our country is safer, stronger, and more prosperous with a fair and humane immigration system," Durbin said. "As the new Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I am committed to repairing the damage of the last four years and finding a path forward to fix our broken immigration system. I will talk to anyone and everyone in the Senate to find a way to pass long overdue reforms, like the Dream Act and legislation to provide a path to citizenship for TPS recipients and farmworkers, which reflect the values of a proud and strong nation of immigrants and their descendants."
