Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García Responds to the Kushner-Miller Immigration Plan

Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús "Chuy" Garcia (IL-04) issued the following statement on the immigration proposal announced today by President Trump:

"The proposal created by Jared Kushner and Stephen Miller and presented by President Trump today is an ill-advised immigration plan that will not address the challenges our families have faced for a long time. Not even Republicans like the plan.

"It includes all the elements of his past failed immigration proposals, like the inefficient border wall. The plan does not help immigrants who have been forced to live in the shadows for years.

"This plan does not address Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or Temporary Protected Status. In fact, it limits the access of asylum seekers and instead focuses on what this Administration condescendingly calls "merit visas". Under a plan like this not even Donald Trump's mother would have been able to come to our country.

"Today I held a listening session with families from my district who came to Washington to tell their stories of separation and hardship. Their children are growing up without fathers or mothers due to deportation. The only way to end this is with a serious immigration proposal that includes a path to legalization.

"It's time to end the cruel immigration policies of the Trump Administration that separate families. Immigrants enrich our economy and society and we should welcome those who seek a better life, as we have done for centuries."
