Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García’s Statement on the Resignation of Boeing’s CEO

December 23, 2019

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg:

"I called for Mr. Muilenburg's resignation when he testified before the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in October. It was clear then as it is now, a culture of negligence, incompetence or corruption starts at the top. Mr. Muilenburg padded his personal finances by fostering a corporate culture that put profits over safety, and as a result 346 people are dead. His resignation is long overdue.

"The ongoing congressional investigation has made it clear that Mr. Muilenburg's relentless focus on stock price and the company's bottom line negatively affected employee performance. He did everything to drive profits over safety. He eluded regulations at every corner and even his employees admitted to lying to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Either Mr. Muilenburg didn't realize Boeing had a defective plane -- which demonstrated gross incompetence and negligence -- or he knew he had a defective plane but still tried to push it to market, in which case it is just clear corruption. The result of Mr. Muilenburg's mismanagement is catastrophic and tragic. I look forward to working with Boeing's new leadership to ensure the safety of the flying public."
