Congressman García's Statement on the President's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to President Biden's State of the Union Address:

"President Biden took office in the midst of an economic crisis and a raging pandemic, but he's done what he promised to do: rebuild our economy, invest in our country's future, fight the pandemic, and work with our allies to keep us safe. Last night, the President laid out a compelling agenda for confronting instability abroad and economic uncertainty at home. He united the world against Vladimir Putin's attack on the people of Ukraine and reminded our country that when we build the economy from the bottom up and not from the top down, we can build a better America.

"But when I walk through my district in Chicago and Cook County, I hear from my constituents who are still struggling to buy a home or pay their rent, burdened by student loans, medical debt, and wages that don't keep up with the costs of living. This economic crisis hit Latino and Black workers the hardest, and they need more action from the White House.

"I appreciate that the President signaled his support for immigration reform, but he missed an opportunity to outline more specific steps to ensure relief for immigrants through executive action and House approved legislation stalled in the Senate. While the Biden administration has made important reforms to end some of the cruel immigration policies imposed by Donald Trump, much more remains to be done. Immigrants have waited decades for reform, and it's time for action. DACA recipients, TPS holders, and other hard-working immigrants I represent are waiting for a path to citizenship that will give them the dignity and peace of mind they need and deserve. My constituents need this help now. We cannot wait any longer."

WASHINGTON, DC – El Congresista Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) emitió la siguiente declaración en respuesta al Discurso del Estado de la Unión del Presidente Biden:

"El Presidente Biden asumió el cargo en medio de una crisis económica y una grave pandemia, pero ha hecho lo que prometió hacer: reconstruir nuestra economía, invertir en el futuro de nuestro país, luchar contra la pandemia y trabajar con nuestros aliados para mantenernos a salvo. Anoche, el presidente presentó una agenda convincente para enfrentar la inestabilidad en el exterior y la incertidumbre económica en casa. Unió al mundo contra el ataque de Vladimir Putin contra el pueblo de Ucrania y le recordó a nuestro país que cuando construimos la economía de abajo hacia arriba y no de arriba hacia abajo, podemos construir una país mejor.

"Pero cuando camino por mi distrito en Chicago y el condado de Cook, escucho a mis electores que todavía luchan por comprar una casa o pagar la renta, agobiados por préstamos estudiantiles, deudas médicas y salarios que no se mantienen al día con los costos de vida. Esta crisis económica golpeó más fuerte a los trabajadores latinos y afroamericanos, y necesitamos más acción de la Casa Blanca.

"Agradezco que el presidente señalara su apoyo a la reforma migratoria, pero perdió la oportunidad de delinear pasos más específicos para garantizar alivio para los inmigrantes a través de la acción ejecutiva y la legislación aprobada por la Cámara de Representantes que está estancada en el Senado. Si bien la administración Biden ha realizado importantes reformas para poner fin a algunas de las crueles políticas de inmigración impuestas por Donald Trump, aún queda mucho por hacer. Los inmigrantes han esperado décadas por la reforma, y es hora de actuar. Los beneficiarios de DACA, los titulares de TPS y otros inmigrantes trabajadores que represento están esperando un camino hacia la ciudadanía que les brinde la dignidad y la tranquilidad que necesitan y merecen. Mis electores necesitan esta ayuda ahora. No podemos esperar más".
