Congressman García Votes to Avert Elon Musk’s Government Shutdown

December 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement after voting for H.R. 10545, the American Relief Act, a continuing resolution (CR) that extends government funding, passes critical disaster assistance, and reauthorizes farm and nutrition programs:

“After Elon Musk, the wealthiest man on earth and Trump’s apparent puppeteer, destroyed a carefully negotiated bipartisan spending deal, he sent the House of Representatives spinning toward a holiday government shutdown. Today, I joined my fellow Democrats in supporting a bill that prevents the shutdown, keeping government services open and federal workers and service members paid.

“The bill we passed to be the adults in the room is not perfect. For example, it was missing prescription drug reforms to stop abusive pricing practices, a ban on junk fees related to hotels and live events, and funding for safe drinking water—all of which had been included in the bipartisan deal that Musk ruined. But by presenting a unified front, House Democrats successfully funded the government and strengthened their leverage to challenge Trump when he tries to extend his tax cuts for billionaires next year.

“Despite the chaos this week, I will continue standing for working families and against  oligarchic power grabs.”
