Congressman García’s Statement on Today’s New York Times Reporting on Migrant Child Labor

April 17, 2023

CHICAGO- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement in light of reporting by the New York Times on instances of migrant child labor in his district and across the country:

“Today’s reporting by the New York Times on migrant child labor hits home.I migrated to Chicago when I was nine. I know the fear of coming to a new country at a young age. These children should be attending school, not working overnight in slaughterhouses, replacing roofs, or operating heavy machinery in factories. It is sickening that migrant children in Little Village are being exploited and endangered.

“This is a failure on many levels. A shocking lack of oversight by the Biden Administration and a broader indictment of a cruel immigration system that forces migrant children into situations like this.

“I will continue to track developments and my office stands ready to support and protect the migrant children in my district.”
