Congressman García’s Statement on the Trump Tax Scam

February 25, 2025

We won't let Republicans permanently rig the tax system against working people

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting NO on the House Republican budget resolution:

“A budget is a statement of our nation’s values, and once again, Republicans have made their values clear: protect billionaires at all costs while punishing working and middle-class people.

“This budget is a full-scale assault on families, seniors, and children. Republicans want to permanently rig the tax code for corporate giants and billionaires while slashing Medicaid, cutting food assistance programs, and gutting hard-earned retirement benefits for seniors.

“In my district, more than 115,000 children from low- and moderate-income families are covered by Medicaid and CHIP and the Republican budget scam would leave thousands without affordable health care, placing their future at risk.

“This plan also increases funding for interior immigration enforcement to supercharge Trump’s mass deportation agenda and terrorizes communities like mine, while lining the pockets of the private prison companies that got him elected.

“I heard from people in my district last week who are being left behind by these reckless policies, like Maria, who cleans residential and office buildings. I met Mr. Johnson, a 76-year-old retiree who is choosing between medicine or heating bills after paying into Social Security for decades. While working people like them live paycheck to paycheck, Trump and Republicans want to reward executives who pay less in taxes than the people who make their offices work.

“This is economic warfare against everyday people. It’s time we make billionaires and corporations pay what they owe. As Democrats we must fight—no compromises, no concessions. Working people deserve leaders who stand up for them and against the interest of billionaires.”
