Congressman García’s Statement on the Passage of H.Res. 771
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting “present” on H.Res. 771:
“I co-sponsored H.Res. 771 when it was first introduced because it rightly condemns Hamas’ attack against Israel and calls for the release of all hostages. Targeting civilians is both abhorrent and illegal under international law.
“For the same reason, I cannot condone language that fails to acknowledge the overwhelming loss of Palestinian life as Israel intensifies airstrikes. That’s why I voted ‘present’ today.
“We must urgently focus on freeing hostages, getting aid into Gaza at the massive scale that is needed, and preventing an even more devastating regional conflict. There is no military solution to this horrifying situation. Bombs will not bring a durable peace.”
