Congressman García’s Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Abortion

WASHINGTON, DC — Today Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization which will have widespread consequences across America.

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is not only about access to abortion care—it is an attack on one’s rights to control their own lives, bodies, and future, and we should all be enraged. No politician or court should ever dictate your own decision about whether to have children and under what circumstances. We should trust people, not politicians, to make their own, deeply personal choice about their health and their lives.

“The impact of this decision will not fall equally on everyone. Wealthy individuals will still get safe, legal abortions by flying to other states or traveling to other countries. For Latino, Black, Asian, Native and other marginalized communities, the impact of overturning Roe is dire. Our country is turning back the clock on access to reproductive health.

“We must use every tool at our disposal to protect the bodily autonomy of all people—regardless of income, race, or immigration status. A group of unelected judges has eliminated a fundamental right that a majority of Americans support, and we cannot back down now. Congress has the power to make access to abortion care the law of the land. The Senate must move quickly to abolish the filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act.

“Until then, access to abortion care is still legal in Illinois. I hope states like mine protect and expand access to care and serve as a haven for those who will come from other states. They must fill the void that the Supreme Court created today.”
