Congressman García’s Statement on Reports of Reinstating Migrant Family Detention

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to reports that the Biden administration is considering reinstating migrant family detention:

“Once again the Biden administration is walking back its promises to our migrant community,” said Congressman García. “It is unacceptable that this administration would even consider going back to the Trump-era policies that caused so much harm and trauma to children and families. Family separation is inhumane, ineffective, and should not be used as a weapon against desperate families seeking safety and a better life.

“As the administration prepares to end Title 42 in May, it needs to work with Congress to create a humane immigration system without jeopardizing the safety of families seeking our protection.”
