Congressman García’s Statement on H.R. 7024
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement after voting for H.R.7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act.
“I voted for the bill tonight because its expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) will help lift 400,000 children out of poverty nationwide in its first year alone. I represent a district with a significant population of Latino and mixed-status families who will directly benefit from this expansion. As we continue to push for a full restoration of the American Rescue Plan’s expanded CTC, this bill is a modest yet impactful improvement to the current program and also increases access to affordable housing.
“It is shameful that in order to allow modest concessions to poor families, Republicans were able to force in the restoration of massive Trump-era corporate tax breaks. These cuts give some of the country’s largest companies a negative effective tax rate.
“I voted yes with the full understanding that our work does not end here—that the CTC expansions in this bill should serve as a floor for future improvements, and that we must sharpen our resolve to advance bills that put people first.
