Congressman García’s Statement on Attempts to Undermine Chicago’s Sanctuary City Status
CHICAGO – Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement regarding proposals to weaken the Welcoming Ordinance in Chicago:
“As an immigrant who proudly served in Mayor Harold Washington’s administration when he signed the nation’s first executive order in 1985, establishing Chicago as a sanctuary for immigrants, I oppose recent efforts to weaken our welcoming city. While I was Cook County Commissioner, I further strengthened protections by limiting local police coordination with ICE. Now, a group of misguided individuals attempt to undermine the community’s hard-fought protections under the pretense of public safety. We must oppose these attacks that will lead to enhanced racial profiling, separation of families, and the violation of civil rights of both immigrants and U.S. citizens. I will continue fighting for fair and humane treatment of immigrants and for more investments in violence intervention programs and resources that can truly keep our communities safe.”
