Congressman García’s Statement in Response to Biden’s Immigration Announcement

June 18, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to President Biden’s immigration announcement:

“Today’s announcement by President Biden offers hope and stability for thousands of mixed-status families and DACA recipients including those in my district. One child out of every ten in Illinois has an undocumented parent. These moms and dads, husbands and wives have built lives in our country and have contributed to the economy but live in constant fear of deportation due to the lack of permanent status. Parole in place for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens will help thousands of families remain together, just as it has helped our military families stay together.

“Providing relief and peace of mind to mixed-status families, and to the 45,000 DACA recipients in Illinois is a step in the right direction but we cannot stop here. Chicago and many cities across the country have been welcoming migrants and asylum seekers for generations. We must continue to push for work permits for our long-term immigrants who have waited for relief for decades. Working together we can create a fair and just immigration system for families and communities across the country.”
