Congressman García Responds to Trump’s Executive Order to Collect Citizenship Information

July 11, 2019

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to President Trump's announcement that he will issue an executive order to collect citizenship information from every department and agency in the federal government:

"Today's announcement from the President and Attorney General was nothing more than a pathetic attempt to save face in light of certain defeat. President Trump's claim that he would defy the Supreme Court decision by issuing an Executive Order was unconscionable, un-American, and in direct conflict with the fundamental separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution.

"While we await further details about the President's Executive order, today's announcement should serve as a reminder that we must remain vigilant against a president who will stop at nothing to advance an agenda of division and hate."

In 2018, as Cook County Board Commissioner for the 7th District, Congressman García filed an Affidavit in connection with State of New York, et al. v United States Department of Commerce, et al. expressing concerns about how his constituents would be affected by the citizenship question in the 2020 census.
