City Council discusses food inspections, bill for undocumented immigrants

Following a July audit on the Berkeley Environmental Health Division’s failure to meet food safety inspection targets, Tuesday’s Berkeley City Council meeting reviewed the audit alongside discussions to amend the Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929, or the Registry Bill.   

Presented by City Auditor Jenny Wong, the audit report discussed how the program’s Environmental Health Division — which is responsible for permitting and inspecting the restaurants in question — is failing to meet its food safety inspection targets, raising concerns about public health risks.
