Statement by Rep. García on Increased Surveillance on Immigrant Families

Press Release

Chicago, IL - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to new press reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will intensify its surveillance and enforcement operations in sanctuary cities across the country:

“The dramatic escalation of President Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda and his retaliation against sanctuary cities is meant to stoke fear and send immigrants further into the shadows. These enforcement actions include sending ICE agents in military style fatigues, carrying military-grade weapons to knock on families’ doors. Their increased presence will inevitably scare people from participating in the Census 2020. In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, more aggressive immigration operations will create a bigger health risk by discouraging people from seeking medical assistance if they need it. At a time when the government should be doing everything to prioritize the health and safety of communities, Trump is doubling down on his assault on immigrants -- these actions are an affront to human dignity.”
