Statement from Congressman Jesus “Chuy” García on Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism, Anti-Muslim Bigotry and Hateful Expressions of Intolerance
Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting to support H.R. 183, a Congressional resolution condemning anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bigotry and all forms of racism:
“I was proud to support a Congressional resolution condemning anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bigotry and all forms of racism. The resolution passed almost unanimously, and represents the best of our American values.
“I represent a District whose residents hail from all parts of the world. I grew up in Chicago, one of the most diverse cities in the country, including all races, religions and ethnicities. As an immigrant and Mexican American, I believe that the strength of America is found in our shared values and mutual respect for our differences.
“I am deeply alarmed by our current administration that seeks to divide Americans by denigrating Mexicans as rapists, by issuing a Muslim ban, by calling white supremacist marchers shouting anti-Semitic slogans ‘good people’. Words have consequences and the groups targeted by the President have experienced a troubling rise in hate crimes in the past two years.
“While the current administration seeks to divide us by race, religion and ethnicity, I am thankful the Congress unified today to denounce hatred against Jewish and Muslim communities, people of color and all minorities. We must stand together and raise our voices against discrimination, xenophobia and hatred. And we must focus on our common ground, which is how we best serve our communities.
