Statement from Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García on Temporary Reopening of the Federal Government
Washington, D.C.—Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement on President Trump and Republicans’ decision to temporarily reopen the federal government and end the Trump Shutdown:
“It has taken 35 days for President Trump and Senator McConnell to agree to reopen the government and pay federal employees. But the pocketbooks of 800,000 workers who lived in uncertainty for more than a month will not be able to recover immediately. Furthermore, any appropriations agreement needs to include backpay for contract workers.
“Today once again we heard the President speak about a made-up crisis at the border and portray immigrants in the worst light possible. As negotiators work on an immigration and border security package, I urge them to make sure the legislation they put forward is in line with our values as a nation of immigrants.”
