Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement on the passing of Pastor Victor H. Rodriguez:

“I was saddened to learn the tragic news of the passing of Pastor Vic, as we all called him. This is a huge loss for my district and for Chicago. Years ago, he was able to purchase an abandoned church and transform it into one of the most important community centers in Little Village, with a bilingual, multi-cultural congregation that attracted young people from across the city.

“He dedicated his life to improving our community, working particularly to give youth at risk a purpose, a vision and discipline through the boxing program he created at La Villita Community Church. Pastor Vic turned gang members into peace ambassadors. The programs he started at his church broke barriers between Latinos, African Americans and white youth. His church became a place of hope that changed lives.

“It will be hard to fill the space he leaves, but I have faith that among all the lives he changed, there will be someone who will follow in his footsteps. I feel grateful for having known him and called him my friend. My wife Evelyn, my children and I are thinking about him and his family during this difficult time.”
