Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee:

“Congress and the American people have lost a civil rights legend and moral compass for today’s political discourse. Congressman Elijah Cummings dedicated his life to making sure every person in America has the opportunity to pursue the American dream – to get a good education, have the dignity of work, and the ability to provide food and shelter for themselves and their families. He was a fearless champion for the marginalized and voiceless and was a tireless advocate for the people of his beloved city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. His legacy of speaking truth to power will be remembered and missed.

“As a freshman Member of Congress it was inspiring to watch Chairman Cummings in action, fighting to protect and restore integrity to government and our democratic institutions. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and grandchildren as well as the constituents he represented in Baltimore and Howard County, Maryland."
