Chicago, IL - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement in response to constituents and stakeholders calling for a repeal of the statewide preemption that prevents municipalities from enacting rent control laws to protect renters and homeowners:

“After years of skyrocketing rents and the economic shocks caused by COVID-19, my constituents are worried about keeping a roof over their heads. That’s why I am proud to support the Lift the Ban Coalition’s call to repeal the statewide preemption of rent control laws in Illinois. Our communities know what they need, and Springfield must empower them to enact common-sense reforms to prevent a housing crisis in working class neighborhoods like mine,” said Congressman García. “As an Alderman in the mid 1980’s I supported Mayor Washington’s historic tenant’s bill of rights, and in Congress I fight every day to stop evictions and foreclosures, cancel rent and mortgage payments, and provide emergency cash assistance to tenants and homeowners in need. But my constituents need action at the state level—it’s time for Illinois to protect tenants and homeowners.”
