Rep. García Opposes Bloated Defense Bill as U.S. Faces Staggering Impacts of COVID-19
Washington, DC - Representative Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 6395, the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):
“The House of Representatives should not approve $740.5 billion for military programs while working families face a global pandemic and a devastating economic downturn.
“This NDAA fails to deescalate current conflicts, prevent the President from starting a war without Congressional oversight, and end the transfer of military weapons from the Department of Defense to local law enforcement agencies.
“I support the positive reforms included in this bill, like those to address violent extremism and sexual assault in the military. However, I cannot in good conscience vote for a bill that authorizes hundreds of billions for military operations while we desperately lack resources to address the public health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19.”
