We will not leave millions of Americans without health care

Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) voted today in support of H.R. 986, Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act of 2019, legislation that blocks the Trump Administration’s efforts to sabotage Americans’ health care.

On October 22, 2018, the Trump Administration issued new guidance on Section 1332 waivers allowing states to undermine the Affordable Care Act’s critical protections for people with pre-existing conditions.  Among other provisions, the guidance allows states to promote junk insurance plans that discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions and do not cover essential benefits.

“One of my priorities as a Congressman is to ensure that people in my district have access to quality, affordable health care. Trump’s efforts to undermine the Affordable Care Act would put the lives and the economic stability of people in my district at risk.

“There are almost five and a half million people in Illinois living with pre-existing conditions. In Chicago, thousands of people who suffer from heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and mental health conditions could be discriminated against and denied coverage if we don’t stop this new directive that destroys protections for the people who need them most.

“Today a group of mothers of children with special health care needs visited my office in Washington, D.C. and talked about the challenges their face.  Families like theirs would face life-threatening situations if the Trump Administration’s efforts move forward.

“With this legislation we are telling Trump we will not leave millions of Americans without the health care they need.”
