Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García Votes for Fair Pay for Federal Employees

Press Release

Washington, DC- Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 790, the Federal Civilian Workforce Pay Raise Fairness Act of 2019:

“Federal employees just endured the longest government shutdown in history. President Trump and Senator McConnell held federal workers and their families hostage for 35 days. Many of the 60,000 federal employees in my district continued working without a paycheck, while others were furloughed. Even before the shutdown, in eight of the last ten years, basic pay increases for federal workers have failed to keep up with increases in the cost of living. This legislation will end the pay freeze that Trump imposed for the last two years and provide these dedicated public servants with a modest 2.6 percent pay raise in 2019. Our public civilian employees have dedicated their careers to serving the American people. It’s time for us to show our appreciation by providing a raise that gives them financial security and allows them to provide for their families.”
