Washington, D.C . -  Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 6172, the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act, which reauthorizes programs that have been misused to spy on Americans:

“I voted against this bill to protect civil liberties and to oppose federal surveillance programs that have eroded trust in the government for communities like mine. Over the past two decades, these programs have been used to conduct warrantless searches and collect private information like call records and internet search histories. The programs also contain insufficient safeguards on how far surveillance permissions go, meaning entire groups of people might be targeted because of one person’s actions. Though H.R. 6172 contains limited reforms, it does not go far enough to protect the private information of innocent people and keep vulnerable communities safe.”
