Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García’s Statement on Venezuela
Washington, D.C. — Confrontations between opposition protesters and military forces loyal to Nicolás Maduro erupted in Venezuela today after Juan Guaidó, President of the National Assembly, appeared alongside soldiers and called for Venezuelans to take to the streets. Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement regarding this developing situation:
“I am very concerned about the violent clashes that are happening on the streets of Caracas today. The people of Venezuela should have the opportunity to elect their leaders by holding new, fair and inclusive elections.
“Venezuela should follow the recommendations of the International Contact Group, comprised of European and Latin American envoys, and find a peaceful solution to the current crisis by holding credible elections and returning to democracy.
“Maduro has put the country in a desperate situation, but violence will only make Venezuelan’s suffering worse. Both Maduro and the opposition must put the best interests of Venezuelans ahead of their own ambitions.
“By supporting the military uprising happening today, the Trump Administration is perpetuating interventionist policies the United States has historically pursued in Latin America.”
