Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García’s Statement on Situation in Puerto Rico
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) released the following statement today regarding the current governance crisis in Puerto Rico:
“As a representative from a congressional district where nearly 60,000 of my constituents trace their family roots to Puerto Rico, I am deeply concerned about the current situation in the island.
“Governor Rosselló’s statements are deeply offensive and problematic. I am troubled by the corrupt conduct of top officials in his administration, as well as the “machista” culture evident in messages sent by the governor and his inner circle. I proudly stand with the people of Puerto Rico and call on the government to respect the people’s right to protest and de-escalate the situation. Any reports of police abuses, unnecessary use of force, and infringement of rights must be investigated swiftly.
“The political instability in Puerto Rico demands a thorough investigation to hold those who profited, and continue to profit, from Puerto Rico’s economic and political crisis, including government officials, corporations, and individuals accountable. Consequently, this situation has also brought to light the dire need to establish a process for an immediate, comprehensive, and transparent audit of Puerto Rico’s debt to ensure the protection of services and pensions in bankruptcy proceedings. Moreover, it is imperative that we reject additional austerity measures recommended by the Fiscal Oversight and Management Board. Residents of the island have already suffered so much and any efforts to stifle them further of government assistance, as well as political freedom and economic opportunity is short-sighted and wrong.
“The Puerto Rican community is resilient and strong, and I will continue to monitor the situation to partner with advocates of Puerto Rico, including organizations in my district, who have spent decades helping our families in the island and in the mainland.
