Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García’s Statement on the President’s State of the Union Speech
Washington, D.C . - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after President Trump’s State of the Union address:
“From a President of the United States, I had hoped to hear an apology for mistakes and a vision of unity for the future. From this President I heard lies designed to divide our communities and distract us from the fact that he violated the Constitution.
“I had hoped to hear a plan for working with Congress to lower prescription drug prices for the millions of Americans who struggle to pay their medical bills. Instead, I heard lip service from a President who has allowed big pharma to rake in billions while gutting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the courts.
“I had hoped to hear a plan to rebuild bridges, transit lines and public schools, and put more Americans back to work with good jobs. Instead I heard about tax cuts for corporations and the rich while doing nothing for working class families.
“Despite President Trump’s attempts to divide and distract us, I left the House Chamber with the same resolve the night I took my oath. I am committed to ensure families have a voice in Washington and a seat at the table. With the soul of our country and the integrity of our democracy at stake, I will continue to fight for the people and the future of our country.”
