“The House and Senate agree: Congress has the exclusive authority to declare war”

Washington, D.C . -  Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed S.J.Res. 68, a joint resolution directing the President not to engage in further hostilities against Iran without explicit Congressional authorization:

“Today’s vote reaffirmed what is already made clear in the Constitution: Congress has the exclusive authority to declare war. Together with my colleagues in the House and Senate, we voted to stop this and any future President from starting another endless war that wastes resources and endangers people’s lives. War must always be authorized by Congress, and it must always be a last resort.”
