Chicago, ILCongressman Jesús “Chuy” García issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to cut assistance to the Central American countries in the Northern Triangle and his threats to close the border with Mexico.

“President Trump’s decision to cut direct assistance to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador and his threats to close the border with Mexico demonstrate his disregard for our neighbors in the region, and his ignorance about the domestic impacts that our foreign policy decisions have.

“The poverty and violence afflicting these Central American countries are driving migrants seeking opportunity and asylum to the United States. Withdrawing our assistance to improve economic conditions, foster development and promote democracy and the rule of law in the Northern Triangle will only exacerbate these challenges and will escalate the humanitarian crisis at our southern border.

“Furthermore, our country and Mexico trade approximately $1.7 billion in goods daily. Trump’s extreme idea of closing the border would have disastrous consequences for the United States’ economy.

“International leadership requires working with our regional partners, not against them. The challenges of regional migration can only be addressed if we work together to find effective solutions.”
