Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García Responds to SCOTUS Decision Upholding the Trump Administration’s Asylum Ban
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump Administration to deny asylum requests from migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border:
“I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump Administration to enforce new restrictions on asylum seekers at our southern border. This decision reverses decades of U.S. policy of welcoming and protecting refugees whose lives are at stake.
“People don’t leave their homes, their friends and their belongings behind without strong reasons. The migrants that come to our borders are doing so because their lives are threatened by violence and poverty. Denying them the opportunity to seek asylum is contrary to our core values of democracy and diversity. This decision will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis at the border and leave people exposed to danger.
“As the legal challenges to this policy continue, I am hopeful that our nation’s fundamental values will prevail. There are thousands of lives at stake and we cannot allow hate and racism to extinguish the light of hope that America represents to the world.”
